PostSubject: Space 1999   Space 1999 EmptySun Sep 23, 2012 8:43 pm

Since the anniversary of the moon breaking away from Earth was last week and a lot of us have commented on it, I am starting a thread about the show.

I got the inspiration when I mentioned about the landing gear never retracting and others adding thoughts about uniform protocol in the Eagles.

Feel free to add anything, memories, anectdotes about conventions, merchandise you own.

Great minds, etc. I was thinking we needed a 1999 thread yesterday.

Anyway, I have been watching episodes, and I have forgotten just how bad the science was in some of the earlier episodes. Oh well, not any worse than a show about a Time Traveler in a Box.

The Last Sunset was the most recent episode I watched. While it was very cool to see the Moon with a blue sky, there are so many issues. I can assume an alien tech could fit that much air into those tiny probes. And create a trippy fungus for Paul to go nuts with. But when Paul opened his visor and said it smelled like "country air", it lost all credibility for me. The Moon smells like spent gunpowder, and that dust would have been all over their nice shorts and skirts as they played outside the base. Still, it is a blast to watch!

I've always been a spaceship geek, so this show was awesome for me as a 10 year-ish old.

I have memories of watching the second season on my little 13" black & white TV and had to constantly fiddle with the antenna!!

Made the models of the Eagle & Hawk. Still have my Hawk!!!
Replaced my Eagle with super cool die cast ones. (Which, on another tangent, is how I found this site!)

This past week though I've watched Season 1 episodes:

Breakaway
Wargames
Voyager's Return
End Of Eternity
Troubled Spirit
Space Brain
Infernal Machine
Testament of Arkadia

I think I'll probably end up watching The Last Enemy
and that'll be it for now.

Until Halloween, I always watch Dragon's Domain sometime that week.

I repainted mine a few years ago. I built the Eagles back when they were re-released in 1999. Need to take a picture of my Moonbase too.

I only vaguely remember this show from Sci Fi channel re-runs when I was a kid. Somewhere between Lost in Space and Gamera movies.

It cost a lot but was worth it. I bought it in 2001.
I sold a lot of my Transformers on E-Bay to pay for it.

I wish I could make stuff like that!!

One of the qualities I also like is that a lot of their fight scenes were pretty well done for their time. Not just people standing and slugging it out.

I just got Gerry Anderson's "The Day after Tomorrow: Into Infinity" on DVD, which was made right at the time of Space: 1999 (stars Nick Tate and Brian Blessed). It is EXCELLENT. Watched it twice already. Looks just like Space:1999.

If you love the film work of '1999' you'll probably like 'Star Maidens'.
It's not Anderson but some of his production staff were heavily involved with it. Gareth Thomas (Blakes 7) is in it too.

Unfortunately, this is an EXCLUSIVE to FANDERSON (the official Gerry Anderson Fan Club). You would have to join Fanderson first (pay the fee), then you can purchase a handful of exclusive DVDs following your joining.

We have a copy here in the shop so we can show it to people if they want to see it.

Although not 1999 but VERY interesting news to Anderson fans.

Look at the other items from this seller, they'll shock you to know that there's more than a few 'originals' that still exist.
Almost feels like a lost 'Who' ep just turned up!

I'm now watching Star Maidens through for the 2nd time.

It really is a fabulous show; very well-paced and well written. I've noticed that John Lucarotti (Marco Polo, The Aztecs, and The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve) is one of the writers on the series.

I think the series is far better than Blake's 7 and ranks up there with Space: 1999. 13 Episodes (each about 1/2 hour) and a contiguous story line with a satisfactory conclusion make this definitely worth watching. I highly recommend it.

Space 1999 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Space 1999   Space 1999 EmptyThu Nov 15, 2012 2:08 pm

Oh, I remember that special! It aired on NBC's equivalent of the "After School Special" (though it went by a different name. This was still several years (1976, I think) until "affordable" video recorders, but I still preserved it in my own fashion. I used an audio cassette recorder and bridged a cable between my B/W TV's earphone jack and the auxilary input jack of my tape recorder (thus eliminating any external sounds from being captured).

I must have played that tape until the ferrous media nearly rubbed from the tape. I loved the score composed for the presentation, and of course the Altares "light drive" vessel was b*tchin'! At the time I had no idea that was Brian Blessed; he was surprisingly understated with that performances compared to some of his others.

One could argue this was Gerry Anderson's answer to "Lost in Space". But since it didn't have a "Smith" type villain or a robot, it's probably better compared to "LiS" inspiration, "The Space Family Robinson" published by Gold Key Comics.

One has to wonder how things may have unfolded if the special had been picked up as a series as Anderson had hoped. Would we now be complaining how such'n'such studio botched the big budget movie adaptation?

Sincerely,

Bill
