It seams to be a new way to show the Psychic Link the Doctor has with the TARDIS. He has to physically connect with it now.

There's no definitive point in the show that explains how The Doctor can suddenly fly the TARDIS to the correct destination, so I'm not too concerned about this plot device being introduced.
