Not exactly horror, but another genre feature.....just recently got this UK steelbook and have wanted to watch it...

Gonna watch some original series Dark Shadows tonight I reckon...

Anyone remember the After Dark Horrorfest? I was lucky enough to go to the first year Fest, when it was 8 films over one weekend. They only had about 100 theaters then, and my local podunk Wisconsin theater was one of them. The films weren't that great, but it was fun going to double and triple features, and talking with people who came from all over to catch the show. I only missed one of the movies that weekend. I saw:

Wicked Little Things
Dark Ride
The Grave Dancers
Abandoned
Unrest
Penny Dreadful
The Hamiltons

The Abandoned was the only one I bought. For some reason, even though its a fairly basic ghost story, this movie scared the s**t out of me in the theater, and it still does. And that is a rare thing indeed.

The anthologies keep marching on, kiddies...

Are these films trying to send a message?

It doesn't seem like Halloween if I don't watch at least the first two Hellraiser films. After that they take a steady decline in quality.

I liked those first two when I first saw them (the first one I liked more, the second was much 'sillier' to me)...I tried watching one more after that, I think the 4th one, and it was just terrible...not even going to attempt to see any of the others.

3 I enjoyed even despite the cheesiness, 4 I liked for the fact that they explained where the puzzle box came from. After that, they are nearly unwatchable. 5-9 are all straight to DVD, with Doug Bradley returning time and again. Part 5, Inferno, was a boring pseudo-mystery. Hellseeker, part 6, sucked even though Kirsty came back. 7 was a gory cult movie that literally had nothing to do with Hellraiser until the final scene. 8 was a dumb as crap 'Hellraiser in cyberspace' farce of a movie. Part 9 was so bad Doug Bradley refused to play Pinhead.

Heh, I tend to do Hellraisers I, II, and then Inferno. While the Made-for-DVD batch has varying levels of quality (Given the fact they are scripts to other horror movies that just get some tweaks to make them Hellraiser pictures), Inferno is probably the best overall at getting the tone right.

Also the fact Pinhead is in the movie for only five minutes (And what a five minutes it is) and the Cenobites are actually scary...because they show up to punctuate existing scenes, rather then establish them. It makes you question whether they are actually there, or just a sign of the main character (Who is one of those unlikable characters that you end up feeling sorry for at the end, meaning his character had an actual arc to it rather then just generic Horror Movie fodder) slowly going insane.

Seriously, if you haven't yet, give Inferno a try. It's a lot more cerebral and I like the pull back from the fantastical elements.
