Technically, it was Hartnell.

While I watched the TV Movie at the time of its airing and I recall seeing Tom Baker on PBS, and while Tennant was the first Doctor to really make me an avid watcher of the show, my first real memory of Doctor Who was William Hartnell's confrontation with the Cyberman.

Why I recall that sequence is anyone's guess (Thought it is a memorable moment), but it's my first clear memory of the Doctor. And I wasn't that old at the time. Five? Six?

Oh, that's not fair, Scary!

First Doctor I ever saw in action was Eccleston, but the first full episode I watched was Tennant.

That was July 2009. I'm almost 25.

Pertwee, (which must be why he is my favorite!)but I barely remember that, so it was really Baker when I was first into it big time.

It's not a super accurate tool for identifying age, even if you isolate it to just 'broadcast tv' and not vhs, dvd, etc

One example- the way PBS cycled them, if you happened to come in during the 1st and 2nd Doc syndie package... your first Doc might actually be THE First Doc, but in the early/mid 80s instead of the early/mid 60s.

Mine isn't too far off from being first run broadcast accurate. I came in on it when my PBS station was airing the last season of Doc 4 in 1982... and that season was made / aired first run in 1980... decently close.

Hartnell is my first, but Troughton was the current when I was born.

I didn't start watching Who until the 90's.

Tom Baker in Robots of Death on PBS on a Saturday morning. Pathetic I remember that yet I have trouble remembering what I did the week before.

When I was born, The Doctor was Sylvester McCoy (just).

The first Doctor I saw EVER was Tom Baker (and Peter Davison) in a re-run.

The first Doctor I saw in NEW footage was Paul McGann.

Take your pick Razz

Hmm, this isn't working is it. Ah well, still interesting to see how people don't tend to get hooked with the Doctor that's currently airing at the time and actually start off with past Doctors.

Baker, though I was born during his final year.

From 1987 to 1992, it was easy to catch him, and the occasional dabble of Davison not and again here in Michigan.

My first Doctor was Tom Baker in The Sontaran Experiment. I then followed his exploits in the 1970s on the public tv station in State College, PA.

After Tom Baker I saw them in this order:
Peter Davison
Colin Baker
William Hartnell
Patrick Troughton
Sylvester McCoy
Jon Pertwee
Paul McGann
Christopher Eccelstone
David Tennant
Matt Smith

Note: I did see Troughton, Pertwee and Richard Hurndall in multi-Doctor episodes, i.e. The Five Doctors and The Two Doctors but the above list does not take that into consideration.
