Well, since I just finished watching every episode I own since August, I will give this a try!

Just ignore that "not real who" bit. There are some segments of the fanbase that refuse to acknowledge any post-McCoy element of the series. It's a debate that is best avoided.

Here are my 10 favorite episodes:

I just watched Caves of Androzani. It was a good episode, but I don't feel that it was the show's best episode.

Agreed. I thought Caves was average at best and can't understand why people think it was the greatest ever. It was ok, nothing really wrong with it (the magma beast, Peri, and the obvious Phantom of the Opera ripoff spring to mind), but the greatest ever? Why?

Maybe it's fond memories of seeing it when we were younger? I never saw it until a few years ago, having stopped watching after Re. of the Daleks.

I think what initially impressed people about Cave of Adrozani is that it managed to be so much better than its premise, which is (in all honesty) a routine series of chases in some caves with a masked villain and a random monster. It was actually shot with a degree of style, and Davison's performance as the Doctor is richly nuanced. I think it's that unexpected discovery of an episode that rises above its simple origins that excited people, but outside the initial window of discovery--i.e., years later, when we all know what to expect from the episode--it's no longer all that impressive. Good, but not earth-shatteringly so.

Basically, if you saw it "then" and it blew you away, you still hold it up as among the best. If you saw it then and weren't all that impressed--or you saw it later and lacked context--you won't think it's all that great.

Don't forget that season ended not with the regeneration, but with Colin Baker's complete first story. So back then fans went from "Caves" one week...to "Twin Dilemma" the next. Which I always thought explained a lot about these stories' rankings in fan polls.

Has any other TV show in any genre had its (possibly) best episode followed by its (near-universally agreed) all-time worst episode? "Caves" is great, but gets a demerit for Pointless Inclusion of Poorly-Realized Rubber Monster...and how bad can "Twin Dilemma" really be without Mel in it?

I always thought Caves was Peter Davison's best episode as the Doctor. They way he ended up saving Peri's life was his shining moment, IMO. Then the regenration and the first appearance of Colin Baker was tremendous. "Change, my dear, and it seems not a moment too soon..." I loved that line.

Picking a "best episode" is amazingly challenging. Nothing in Series 5... that's easy. There were just so many elements that were great...

It was awesome (if a bit painful) to watch the Doctor snap in Waters of Mars.... the wild, fun ride of Blink was great, the beautiful sendoff in The End of Time was heart-breaking... The Girl in the Fireplace was fantastic, fun, and touching...

I can't decide. But those are examples of favorites.

The Five Doctors! It gives us a little bit of everything, except Doctro 6,7,8,9,10,11 Buuuuuuut, it does really show each of them off in some way.
