Adric is introduced in this story written by a then 17-year-old Andrew Smith.  It is the first of three stories set in what is called exo-space or "E-Space" which is an alternate dimension.

The story itself is a rather more grounded one after a couple of high sci-fi ones and does have a moral message grounded in the relationships of the three civilizations on the planet.  The phrase "full circle" could be used effectively here as another DW drinking game!  I think the look of the Marshmen is rather effective, too.

The addition of Adric as a companion is often a divided discussion among DW fans.  Producer John Nathan-Turner wanted to have a relatable companion for the children watching, and there's no harm in that.  I personally think that through these Tom Baker stories, the Doctor and Adric have a nice tutor/student relationship that comes across nicely...even though behind the scenes its been reported that Tom and Lalla didn't quite get on as well with actor Matthew Waterhouse.

All in all...a pretty good story with Adric being a nice addition to the team.
