James Bond

Why not really Sci-Fi, it s very British! But, I am just heart broken to hear that the next Bond movie has been canceled. MGM's bankruptcy has caused it. With no money, all work has stopped. Just as it has with The Hobbit. I hope, if and when it begins, they can still get Craig back. I loved his Bond.

That is horrible news. I knew the Hobbit was having problems, and MGM was needing to just give them the green light to start, but that is sad to hear.

I really hope things turn around and they can get Craig back as well. He was an awesome Bond. It reignited my enjoyment of the Bond movies once more after Brosnan's last few ruined it.

If the franchise stalls out for any length of time, Craig will probably move on. It's a shame, because I love his take on Bond! Now I know I'm in a relative minority when it comes to this, but I also really enjoyed Timothy Dalton in the role. Dalton, like Craig, played an intense Bond based more on the characterization from the original novels than the version constructed by the films. The reason I mention this is because if this delay results in Craig's contract running out and him moving on, there will be a strange parallel here: the only reason Dalton played Bond just twice was due to a lengthy delay in production (though on that occasion, it was due to legal issues between UA/MGM and Eon, not MGM's financial woes).

In other words, the two Bonds closest to the source material will both have left the franchise because the suits in charge of the franchise couldn't keep their acts together.

Hopefully, this doesn't happen. I'd hate to see Daniel Craig go.

Another parallel between Dalton and Craig (purely in my opinion) is that each actor made an excellent first Bond film, followed by a terrible second film. I hope the parallels between Dalton and Craig do not continue (by which I mean exactly what mysterylad said in the second paragraph of his last post; that each will have ended up doing only two Bond films).

I love the fact that Dalton actually cut lines and lines of his own dialogue in The Living Daylights because he felt Bond was more a man of action; that he would simply act rather than give voice to his every thought and feeling, or foreshadow what he was about to do before he did it. An actor cutting his own dialogue? Pretty amazing! I unfortunately caught a few minutes of Licence to Kill a few years ago as I was channel-surfing -- I actually thought it was a made-for-TV movie before I realized what it was; the production values seemed so low, especially nowadays.

The Daniel Craig films made me relive the same feelings I went through with the two Dalton films. I was so thrilled that Bond was back on form with Casino Royale, then all those hopes were destroyed by Quantum of Solace, which seemed to me like one of those Jean Claude Van-Damme-ish / Steven Seagal-esque movies that proliferated throughout the 90s, but just with a much higher budget.

It's all over the internet this morning that the latest Bond film -- what would have been the third Daniel Craig Bond film -- has been cancelled. It looks like the story originated from AICN, and has been subsequently paraphrased by a bunch of other sites, but a legit news source will probably print the story shortly.

This is a real bummer; it would have been cool to see Daniel Craig as Bond again. To make another one of those Bond / Who parallels that everyone is so fond of making, it looks like Dalton and Craig are akin to the C. Baker and McCoy of the Bond world, with Lazenby still as the McGann.

It's not a bad comparison, especially considering that, like McGann, Lazenby was quite good the one time he got to play the role onscreen.

Well, a day after I read of the cancellation, both Craig and Mendes (the directer) say the movie is on when MGM gets their financial act together. It is really stupid of those in charge of MGM, to halt production on James Bond and The Hobbit, both movies will make millions, and they need those millions!! It is like a retail store closing before Christmas! That is when you make your money to pay for the slow times of the year, or in MGM's case, the bad movies they have made.

Does this mean that they would be willing to come back, signing on again after their current contracts expire? Or is this sarcastic, as in "yeah, the movie is on -- when heck freezes over"?

It means that they are both so excited about the script, saying they could not wait to do it. Craig said he wants to continue in the role.

I haven't been into the 007 series for a long time even though I really like Craig as Bond. I have yet to see his second film in the role as well. Too bad that the new movie is possibly going to get cancelled in a time of remakes. Can you believe they're going to remake Disney's The Black Hole? I can't.

As far as The Hobbit is concerned, well let's say I'm not shedding any tears over its future.

Earl Green told me about it. Not sure how it is going to look in the end. I really liked the cygnus design.

Not only is it an obscure-as-all-get-out Disney flick, but it's aged remarkably well. Most of the special effects still hold up today (The Tram Sequences almost look like modern day CG), and I can't see them leaving in the trippy, demonic impressionist ending.

Though given the time period it was made in, and the fact it's a Disney film, it still blows my mind every time the one guy gets a chestful of Robot Blade Arms. Nightmare Fuel, anyone?

ok. i know i'm in the minority in the world, but i don't like daniel craig in the slightest(even though dalton was one of my favorite bonds).

i hope that the series can go back to all the gadgets, girls, and mojo connery had. two words for you:

macgregor, ewan macgregor.

I like about half the Bond films, and strangely enough, this ratio of like/dislike is also close to 50/50 among each Bond:

Connery:
Like: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger
Dislike: Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, Never Say Never Again

Moore:
Like: The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy
Dislike: Live and Let Die, Moonraker, A View to a Kill

Dalton:
Like: The Living Daylights
Dislike: Licence to Kill

Brosnan:
Like: Goldeneye, The World is Not Enough
Dislike: Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day

Craig:
Like: Casino Royale
Dislike: Quantum of Solace

Some of these are among my all-time favorite films (From Russia with Love, The Spy who Loved Me, Casino Royale). Moonraker and Die Another Day are among my all-time "so bad it's good" movies. My favorite gadgets are the tricked-out attache case in From Russia with Love, the wristwatch in Live and Let Die, and the cable-firing belt buckle in (I think) Goldeneye -- can't tell you how many times I could have used that!

I haven't looked forward to a Bond movie in a while as I don't like Daniel Craig in the role at all. So I'm actually not heartbroken over a hiatus. Hopefully they can come back strong with a new movie and a guy with charisma that takes us back to what a Bond movie should be like. Look what happened with the release of "Goldeneye."

I was thinking of resurrecting this thread, but you beat me to it, SeaDevil. In my last post I wrote about some of my favorite Bond gadgets -- how about some of yours, everyone? My favorite car is the Lotus Esprit from The Spy who Loved Me. Favorite Bond Girl? Tanya from From Russia With Love. Favorite Bond Villain is a hard one, but for now, I'd say Goldfinger. Coolest Bond Opening is still the ski jump off the cliff from Spy Who Loved Me -- I don't know if that will ever be beaten!

Yeah, the gadgets in Goldeneye were neat, but it was the story that was the real hook. Unfortunately, the studio took away the message of "Gadgets! MOAR GADGETS!" and the writing suffered as a result.

i don't know rust. while tommorow never dies wasn't that great(it wasn't that bad as die another day), i thought that the world is not enough was one of the greatest bond movies ever. great story, great gadgets, great baddies. plus im kind of prejudiced to the fact that my favorite band of all time, garbage, did the theme song.

"The World is not Enough" was a decent Bond Flick, I'll admit it (Especially after the two stinkers that preceded it). But I would have liked a little more time spent with the Villain of the piece and getting to know his motivations more.

I got spoiled with Janus/006. He was such a compelling villain (Made all the more by the superb Sean Bean), that the other Brosnan era villains never felt as good in comparison.

i do agree with you on that one., sean bean was a great actor who brought the villain to light, and there's nothing like two 00 agents going at it to the death.

Yes, Goldeneye gave great hope for the Brosnan movies,too. But, I was disappointed. Althought, I did love the begining of Die Another Day, an Bond being captured and tortured.

So, who else watches Bond movies witht the theory that James bond is just a code name for the 007 agent? And that is why they always change? I love what Lazenby said in OHMSS, about this never happening to the other guy.

That's my wife's theory, too. Whenever I remind her that Roger Moore visits Tracy Bond's grave at the beginning of For Your Eyes Only, which is a pretty strong indicator he's the same guy, she just shushes me.
