A couple months ago, I undertook a task to go back and watch a random sampling of Who episodes. My goal was very simple: to prove that Doctor Who is just like any other sci-fi program or movie...that some episodes are good and some episodes outright suck.
I was mainly looking for the episodes that outright suck.
Before starting my journey, I promised myself two things:
1) Do not judge an episode based on special effects
2) Do not judge an episode on contemporary technology (i.e. don't criticize an episode because it doesn't have something similar to cell phone technology, because they use an older type of media to store their data, because they have big computers, etc.)
So I started watching episodes...in random order. Peter Davison, Tom Baker, Colin Baker, etc.
Shockingly, I discovered that the shows held up over time. The stories were good. Some very interesting ideas were presented.
To date, I'm not sure how many episodes I've re-watched. But I can tell you it's a large number. And I have to say, honestly, that none of them sucked. None of them.
I'm scratching my head now wondering. Is it possible that this is the greatest show ever? Was the writing that good? And so consistently good? I'm still looking for that one episode with no redeeming qualities...something to break this trend of great watching.
