| I have so say that Liz Shaw needs more recognition for being a great companion/assistant. Apart from Romana, who is a Time Lord like the Doctor, she is the only one of his companions who are close to being his equal as a scientist. She was perhaps not the kind of companion the kiddies could relate to, but for a sci-fi show she was superb. She never went screaming about Autons, Silurians, or any of the other crises in her brief tenure on the show. The TARDIS didn't even rattle her. Sure she was skeptical about these things, but approached them all as a scientist. She was always the capable assistant the Doctor needed at UNIT. I'm very fond of Jo and Sara Jane is the real benchmark for companions, but Liz was Pertwee's best companion ever. Don't believe me? Just revisit her stories - especially "Ambassadors of Death" or "Inferno." Hell, you might as well go ahead and watch "Spearhead from Space" and "Silurians" while you're at it and be done with it.! They're fantastic, too! |

| Oh, I agree about Liz! I think she gets overlooked. I think partly because she was on for so few stories she gets overshadowed by Jo. But she was quite a modern sort of companion and a nice foil for Pertwee I thought. |

| yeah i totally agree she was by far doctor whos most positive role model for women. smart, sexy, reacted with horror to horrible things but didnt turn into a sniffilling whiney female. no wonder they got rid of her as fast as possible. |

| As a kid who was obsessed with actual science as well as science fiction, I always really liked Liz. A lot of my favorite fictional characters have been scientists. |

| Yes, much love for Liz... and other brains too (Zoe, Nyssa...) Such a shame that the highly intellegent female companions tend to suffer... 1) being written out because 'we need companions to use for exposition'. If the companion is pretty much on the same level as the Doctor, then the Doctor has no one he needs to explain everything to... and the writers want that in there for the sake of the audience being able to understand what is going on. 2) starting off strong, but then the writers degenerate them over time to where they mearly serve typical plot elements: scream queen, damsel in distress, etc. and their intelligence or profession just goes out the window. Sometimes it will pop back up again, but only if needed by the current plot. |

| Unfortunately, I think that reflects more on the nature of the TV audience than it does on the writers. Most writers would prefer a smart, confident character...but network execs (whether in the UK or anywhere else) like their programming easily palatable by the widest number of possible viewers, and many of those viewers demand that exposition you mentioned. |

| Loved the miniskirt and boots in "Ambassadors of Death," too. Smokin' hot! And a brainy scientist to boot! Brilliant! |

| I loved liz too- my favorite episode with her was inferno- good girl, bad girl. The producer/directors were hard on her...but she said that Pertwee was a true gentleman and always treated her right. She did alot of her own stunts...even though she was pregnant at the time!
Speaking of ambassadors- I wonder when will they ever release the dvd? |

| I actually preferred Liz Shaw to Jo Grant from the get go. I guess they needed someone less smarter so that the Doctor would have to explain things to and to be more in sync with a younger audience. At least we had Liz in my favorite JP eppie Inferno. |

| She is amazing, right from the beginning, the Doctor's equal in every way. Which, I suppose, was her downfall.
But, at least she gets to hang out on the Moonbase!! I imagine her up there on the Moonbase from UFO, in tight silver spacesuit, with a purple wig!! |

| That's kinda why I rewatched Inferno and resurrected the thread. I suppose I should thank you for bringing her up again so that others can join in the love for Liz.
I like to occasionally look at old threads anyhow to see what can be discussed anew. Sometimes I get a little disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discussion of Who and why we all love it. |

In fact, it makes me want to re-watch Inferno as well, it's so brilliant. |

| My wife is getting me an autographed pic of Caroline John for my birthday. Its the shot of the Brig, Third Doctor, and Liz walking along the Thames, in color. She asked what I wanted, so I found this and said, "THAT!" Bless her heart. Love to the missus! |
