ok, not really spoilers, because i don't know if this would really happen, but just so people wouldn't get upset, i put that in there.

i was reading on another site that the next x-mas special might(might being the key word) be some version of charles dicken's x-mas story. possibly involving a past doctor to help matt smith through the adventure.

certain names came up.

tennant: i think it's been too soon since he left, like tom baker deciding not to do the 5 doctor's, plus he's busy filming all sorts of stuff.

mccoy: i like mccoy, but i just don't know how (let's use the word "spry") he is anymore. great doctor, though, and wouldn't mind seeing him back.

and now, my favorite for returning for one special:

mcgann.

this would end once and for all the argument that his doctor didn't count because it was made in "america". it would also give mcgann a chance to come back and shine in the role (at least for one episode).

unlike timecrash, i'm hoping for a whole episode here. thoughts? anyone think this is a good idea? horrible idea?

I did quite like this rumor when I heard it. I don't really care who's in above and beyond McGann, though-- he needs it where the other guys don't, for the reasons you pointed out.

McCoy'd be great as long as he shaved that doofy caterpillar he's been sporting above his lip lately Laughing

i think we should start a pole to get mcGann back into the role, even if just for one episode to help the 11th, like you say he needs the chance to show that his doctor was,nt a 1 hit wonder.

I speculated this, and discovered last night that I'm not the only one who thinks confirmed guest star Michael Gambon might be playing the First Doctor...

We never know though, Doctor Who (and a lot of BBC shows I've discovered) tend to do just what we don't expect them to.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Michael Gambon turned out to be the Doctor's father? They can hint at it just like they did with the Lady in White. Although I'm still not convinced she's the Doctor's mama but there you go.

And it would explain why the First Doctor's mug kept showing up in Season 5. That always struck me as sort of a build up.

I'd really really really LOVE to see him appear in the tv show again. Big question would be, why is the tv series ignoring him when the BFA LOVES HIM?! He's so popular. Sad

I don't think there's any evidence to suggest the show's producers have ignored him; they've shown his face several times on the modern series, after all, and RTD wanted us to see him regenerate into Nine in the comics before that plan fell through (which was the fault of the people behind the comics, not the show). I've also read statements made by McGann in which he said he was open to the idea of appearing onscreen as the Doctor again, but only if he could do it without the wig. That's a weird caveat for a professional actor, and in my opinion is an indicator that he's not terribly interested in doing it. It's obvious he loves the character, but I think he's satisfied with his BFA work.

I hope I'm wrong, though. I'd love to see him onscreen again.

"Ignore" isn't really the right term. In "Human Nature," "The Next Doctor," "The Eleventh Hour," and "The Lodger," he's seen as a previous incarnation, and 11 saying he is the eleventh incarnation verifies he is the 8th.

But, aside from "Time Crash" and those little glimpses, we haven't seen any other previous Doctors return, so it's not like they're really ignoring him, they just haven't come up with a story to bring him in on, if they want to. (Last I heard, they're not really keen on doing more multi-Doctor stories. And Paul McGann doesn't want to wear a wig.)

Easy enough solution. Just mention the 8th Doc lost a hair-vs-mask match in a run down in Mexico. Against 4, who was competing as "The Crazy Scarf" sometime around Dimensions in Time...

I did hear, however, that Paul McGann is waiting for the call. Surely he'd be prepared to wear a wig if it meant he could return to Doctor Who once more?

To write off the wig would be so easy to do considering everything that the poor Eighth incarnation has to go through. I've had the urge to do it enough times in my fics just because he looks better without it and well, knowing that McGann doesn't like the wig just makes it easier to write out.

So please... wonderful people of BBC... bring back our wonderful Eighth Doctor, without the wig... PLEASE!!!

The biggest thing is to not get into the habit of overusing previous Doctors in stories too much, or you run the risk of ruining the specialness of those stories. The fact it's not done so often is what makes us pine for them, after all.

Just now it is pure speculation.

You mean McGann, I take it. He's not bald...he just has shortish hair, as he always has. He wore a wig when he played the Doctor, and has gone on record saying he didn't like wearing one and would love to play the character again as long as he doesn't have to wear a wig. That means McGann's Doctor would now be short-haired, looking a lot different now than he did when we first saw him, and since the hair is really part of the character's dashing, romantic image (an image which is on the cover of every book, every audio, and in every comic the Eighth Doctor appears in), that change would be seen by a lot of people as a deal-breaker.
