This is a really thrilling Manchurian Candidate-type story with the Doctor alone without a companion.  This is our first REAL look at Time Lord society at any great length, and it sets the tone for them in all future appearances.  This story also features the return of The Master, although in an emaciated condition.

The Gallifreyan sets and costumes look great, and George Pravda and especially Bernard Horsfall are superb in their guest roles, with Tom Baker being at perhaps his absolute best.  I really liked the nightmarish feel of the Doctor trapped in the Matrix.  This whole serial is just terribly exciting and very well done.
