076 - The Ark in Space

Humanity, mystery, siege, and the ultimate sacrifice. This is a great story! Tom gets some great scenes here and a real chance to show off what is to come with his Doctor. Harry also gets quite a lot of screen time to sink his teeth into; usually Sarah gets quite a lot to do but I guess they gave her a smaller role in order to allow Harry to fit in.

This is a quality serial. There are a number of scenes I loved. For example, the Doctor calling Sarah useless and unreliable when she'd given up in the tunnel in order to annoy her and thus motivate her to carry on. And I loved the scene where the Doctor was on his own looking around and gave that speech about mankind being indomitable. Already in only his second story, the 4th Doctor is getting some quality character development. Some really memorable scenes!

Great production values in this one.  Love the costumes/uniforms, the model work was very good, the Wirrn was a great creation, and the sets were beyond amazing - particularly the windowed corridor and the crew's stasis chamber.  They got good use out of the sets too, as they were used for Revenge of the Cybermen as well.

One drawback was the use of spray painting bubble wrap green for the transformation of Noah, but its still kind of effective.

The story itself is a cracking good one with lots of great moments for Sarah and Harry.

A classic and essential viewing.
