I thought all the talk was that Discovery would be set before the JJ Trek so it's still in the "prime" timeline.  At least I'm hoping that's still the case.

I can accept that the producers (and actors) don't want a show that looks like "The Cage" pilot form the classic series.  Designers continually want to "put their own stamp" on things and re-design uniforms and sets.  That I can live with.

But are the aliens in the trailer meant to be Klingons or something else?
They are in fact Klingons, the writers have stated that the design throughout the history of trek has varied so dramatically that any further designs designate family head crests (paraphrased quote) each house has a particular style of forehead.

Ehh, if it's not broke... But as I said before getting top talent means they're going to get folks who want to do their own thing. Sometimes it works like Classic Klingons into Movie/TNG Klingons and sometimes you get Daleks transforming into Fatleks/Skittles. If they keep the Gene Roddenberry vision alive then that's what keeps it Trek versus generic sci-fi.

Did anyone go see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in the theater? It was one of those Fathom Events things. It really was awesome to see it on the big screen again, after 35 years. We went Thursday night, and had about 50 people there. The theater was about a 25 minute drive on country roads to a near by town. Basically what we had to do back then as well.

I found out too late about the ST2 screenings. At least, there weren't any close ones that I could see (found out the same day).

As for Discovery, I'm not too crazy about it. I like the idea of doing something in the "classic" continuity, but I really dislike things like the changed Klingon appearance. They were good enough, why did Abrams and Discovery have to change it up? It was unnecessary. And why is it on a paid service, when we've been able to watch it for free over the air for years?

I had heard that Colin Baker was making a guest role in one of the Star Trek Continues.  Nice small part owing to limited time for filming in the USA.  But I was pleasantly surprised to find Nicola Bryant (Peri) as the latest guest star this week.  Not just a cameo, but full on whole episode main guest.  "To Boldly Go Part 1" on Youtube among others.  I've enjoyed just about all the episodes and been impressed by the last few guest cast members involved.

Yeah, I've watched the "Continues" episodes. They're all really good, with everything a nod to the classic series. From the lighting to the music to the costumes and sets. "To Boldly Go" was great, both parts. Without giving away spoilers, a nice bridge to the movies.

Having finally finished watching all of Star Trek Discovery, I am glad I finished. It is really hard to discus without spoilers, but I now understand why some things I didn't like at first were really there for a very good reason. The surprise at the very end was nice as well, and now has me wanting season 2 even more.
Spoiler:

Still not a fan of the Klingons.....

I think I'm only up to 6 or 7. Some things I like, some not so much. It's tough to discuss without being full of spoilers.
I can say the use of profanity in one of the earlier episodes seemed to serve no real dramatic purpose. Not sure how it pushed the Star Trek mythos forward as it just seemed to be dropped in to one episode so far and never used again.

Smeg 'em. At least it sounds worth watching through until the end.

I loved DISCO from the get go, although yes, the 'new' Klingon design takes some getting used to.

Excited for what they are gonna do with season 2, considering who we are probably gonna be seeing in the first episode...

Spoiler:

Still not a fan of the Klingons.....

I finally finished the series a week ago.  Overall I thought it was good.  Not fantastic, but certainly not the trainwreck that some fans were predicting.

I also watched the DS9 "Trials and Tribbilations" episode where they discuss how to handle Worf with Classic Klingons.  The answer is that there is no good answer.  I like these new Klingons better than the JJ Abrams versions, but they're still only in 3rd place behind Classic and Movie/TNG.  They still venerate Kahless so it's not a total reboot from the TNG mythos, just a whole bunch of other stuff added.

Spoiler stuff:

So while it did end up having the Roddenberry optimism at the end, it sure did have a long uphill fight to get there.  Hopefully series 2 will have more Trek feel throughout if they want to build up a loyal following.

So which new series was better?  The Orville or Star Trek Discovery?  Initial reports were that The Orville was so much better than Discovery could ever be before Discovery premiered, but I haven't heard that for a while.

I liked Discovery.....but I LOVED The Orville. It was not a spoof show like originally promoted. But it had some humor to it and it was bright and fun and told some darn great stories.

That is awesome! I recently watched through all of DS9, a ST show that used to be lower in my list of favorites. Maybe it's because I'm older, but now DS9 is right in the top 3 of the various ST series.

Yup.

I'd rather have Kira's, but it looks like it's only cut for women. Boooooooo.

I still want to get a DISCO shirt, and the NX 01 cap is tempting too.

The NX-01 cap is cool. But the "Disco" just doesn't work for me! LOL
