For those familiar with the first Doctor and his adventures might be able to comment.

This reckless or uncaring streak in the latest incarnation reminds me of the first Doctor as portrayed by William Hartnell.

His Doctor would put his own interests or beliefs above all else around him.
The 1st Doctor would easily put those around him in danger or even to let them perish if benefited him.
The original Dalek story is one example.

The 10th Doctor has also been observed in such actions. Look at the Christmas special with Tate or the recent Pompei story.

Yeah ol' Bill was quite the curmodgeon. If it was not for Ian I think he would be very dark. Ian basically in more than one occasion, taught the doc how to have a little compassion.

Good point about the 10 and 1 reference...even Donna pointed out that the Doc needs someone. Family of Blood/The Racnoss
are two good examples.
