PostSubject: Wheel in Space on DVD? Wheelie?   Thu Aug 09, 2018 11:17 pm

So ... uh ... can anyone tell me why "The Wheel in Space" is currently up for pre-order on Aamazon? I've literally heard NOTHING about this on any Doctor Who news sites. Not even rumors.

Will it be animated? Will it just be the same recon version that was advertised on the Britbox streaming service? Will it be a crap-job like "Underwater Menace" was?

And why is it being offered for preorder when the Special Edition for "Enemy of the World" isn't anywhere to be found in Region 1?!?!?

Question questions questions .... I need answers!!

Very Happy

In the Daily Mirror recently there was a brief article on what the next animated DVD releases could be. All of The Macra Terror and the missing episodes of The Wheel in Space are apparently the next to be animated. It is slightly understandable why these would be next. They already have the assets to the Season 4 characters (minus Jamie). I'd have thought they would have animated two from the same season. But I suppose they think that Wheel in Space would be a better seller than The Faceless Ones or The Highlanders. I suppose if they do them in pairs next they will join up a popular or important story with one that is less popular!

Don't get too excited. This is just a photosnap reconstruction, not animation. Info here: https://twitter.com/themindrobber/status/1022239725850120193

Oh I got so excited by the thought of it being animated and then the cold hard reality of the situation set in. Oh well.

Many thanks for the info though, amckinney.

Further question: I've seen the Loose Cannon recon and they use a lot of nice CGI animation. Did they do that for the Britbox version as well?

This is not an official anybody, its just a guy on twitter, and besides people misguide truth all the time, so until someone official clears all this up, I don't believe a word of it.

I think what this "just a guy on Twitter" says is more likely than an animation. For a start, this title has not been listed on the UK site. If this were being animated, it would be released in R2 (and, likely before R1). This is only a US release so far. It's been suggested this is a US exclusive (like the 3D "Dark Water" was).

I see absolutely no reason to think this will be completed with animation...unless a couple of episodes have been returned that no-one knows about.

I agree with you its probably the Britbox recon, but I'm just saying that its foolhardy taking anyone's word about anything when it comes to missing episodes, at this stage of the saga.

Here's more...from a Doctor Who News story post...

A new animated sequence from the 1968 Doctor Who story, The Wheel In Space, is to get its debut at the British Film Institute's Southbank Centre this December.

The 10-minute sequence is from Episode 1 of the six-part story. The episode has been missing from the BBC archives since it was junked in the early 1970's. Only two of the six episodes from the story still exist in the archives.

This newly announced mini-episode is produced by Charles Norton, who produced the animated versions of Power of the Daleks and Shada. It is directed by Anne Marie Walsh who will introduce the BFI Southbank screening and will be included on a future BBC DVD.

full article here...

I'm assuming that this new animated clip will appear on the supposed "Britbox recon version" DVD...that has still yet to be confirmed.

Do you think they'd actually do a mini episode just to be jerks and not animate the full missing episodes??? That would be a kick in the butt! I assumed this was just a taste of the animation for the full missing episodes on DVD, and that was why we haven't heard anything yet. ugh

perhaps that's all they could afford and decided to spend the rest of the cash on 10 min. Of animated footage rather than saying oh well can't afford it. I will take what I can get.

Yeah but don't you find it a bit suspicious that if they were gonna animate anything to do with the episode, it would be B/W, not color...? And why bother teasin the fans with 10 min. i think they are either lying and all the missing eps are animated, or they are telesnapping for now and they'll release an animated special edition eventually. Why else make only 10 min of animation, we've seen their animation before...so why make a big deal to "show us" they can animate it. And why would they go ahead and animate the FULL Macra Terror, and not animate the missing eps. of Wheel?? As "Wheel" is much more important as it's Zoe's first story and the final cyberman story that we need on DVD.

I really wonder if the Britbox deal is somehow factoring into this. I mean, Aamazon in the USA put Wheel up for pre-order, but there wasn't an official BBC announcement of an official release as I recall. So ... maybe part of the Britbox deal to make the telesnap recon was they would be allowed to put it out on DVD to make some $$ from it??? (Because honestly, is anyone subscribing to Britbox? Maybe they are, I don't know.)

And the Britbox telesnap recon maybe conflicted with BBC's own plans to animate the story ... I mean, we've seen how the various commercial branches of the BBC don't tend to talk to each other. Maybe they were like: "Oh wait, YOU guys are putting out a DVD??? I thought we were!" And then possibly the only completed animation, the 10 minute chunk, was just thrown onto the American release as a bonus.
It's not the first time releases in the two regions have conflicted.
Wow ... I should write fiction! Get me Big Finish on the phone!!

Again, I have zero idea. The whole thing is just weird....

I do think that reconstruction is a wrench in the works. I wouldn't be surprised if they feel they're saving money for other animations by doing it.

yeah, they probably thought: "Well, they already did it, we're off the hook."

After all people still bought "Underwater Menace", and that was the KING of crap lazy recons. Maybe the numbers look acceptable from their end to do a slideshow release.
